In Greece Εven The Dead Must Pay Bribes

Strange as it may seem, the dead must pay a “fakelaki” too, if they want the Athens Mortuary staff to show them a “special” treatment and complete the mortuary exams at a faster pace.
The Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE) is investigating the mortuary staff’s and individuals’ bank accounts after a report filed by the inspector of Public Administration.
According to the report, several anonymous complaints had been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice about individuals performing autopsies at the Laboratory of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the Medical School of Athens University.
According to the SDOE investigation, which began in early 2011, bribes between €50 and €300 were given to mortuary staff to release the corpses or provide the relatives with the mortuary certificate, while in one case, the owner of a funeral service performing embalming was bribing a mortuary official 180 EUR.
The SDOE now aims at discovering who and how much money was behind the non-receipt and non-value added tax transactions.
Death and taxes do go together, just as the proverb says.
