Fire Breaks Out at Historical Hotel 'Acropole Palace' in Athens

A major fire broke out at the at the historical hotel ‘Acropole Palace’ in Athens around 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
A call was made to fire department and over two dozen fire tenders were rushed to the spot in order to extinguish the fire, since the hotel has recently become a shelter for homeless people.
Although the reason for the fire is unknown yet, firefighters have brought the fire under control.
The hotel was built in 1926-28 by the architect Sotiris Magiasis. It is one of the most important examples of the Greek version of French Art Nouveau. In 1973, during the Polytechnic revolt, the location and its basement hid many students, while the most prevalent photographs of the era were taken from its balconies on the nights of ’73 – photographs that became famous worldwide and included the tank attack on the university. In 1990, the UNESCO convention in Vienna characterized the hotel as a shining example of “ArtNouveau” architecture in Europe.
