One Climber Dead During Cold Spell in Greece

The cold weather in Greece caused the death of one climber and some material damage as the country was gripped by a cold front this weekend, local authorities and media stated on Sunday.
Rescue teams retrieved the body of a young Greek mountaineer who went missing when the group of alpinists climbing the northern mainland mountain Beles were caught in a snow storm. His death was attributed to hypothermia as temperatures plunged to near zero degrees Celsius.
A large part of northern Greece has been hit over the past few hours by heavy snowfall that has affected travelers on national highways, while authorities are on alert over possible floods at the country’s border with Bulgaria due to torrential rains.
Strong winds registering up to nine on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea partially disrupted sea travel and caused material damage to dozens of sailing ships and cars parked at certain ports.
