Chinese Ambassador to Greece Visits Crete

Chinese Ambassador to Greece, Du Qiwen has travelled with his wife to Crete in order to pay tribute to the major Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis by laying a wreath on the latter’s tombstone and visiting the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum.

In his statements after meeting with the prefect of the island, the Chinese official pointed out the historic and cultural friendship ties between Greece and China. Once again he thanked the people of Crete for the large-scale rescue operation of thousands of his fellow compatriots from war-stricken Libya in February 2011.

Furthermore, as announced by both the prefect of Crete and the Chinese Ambassador, Chinese businessmen are expected to visit the Greek island in the first two months of 2012, in order to explore the possibilities of exporting Cretan products to their country.

Prefect of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis underlined that the people of the island arelooking forward to a cooperation between the two countries, especially in the primary and touristic sectors. “We hope to have clear and positive results after the meetings with the Chinese businessmen are concluded” said Arnaoutakis.

President of the Hotel Owners’ Union of Iraklio, Andreas Metaxas, who attended the meeting, stressed out the fact that the island can provide 12 months long tourist services.

The Chinese Ambassador has also visited the Secretary General of the Decentralized Management of Crete, Athanasios Karoutsos, with whom they discussed about the important progress in the strengthening of the bilateral relations and the investing activities of the two countries.

Du Qiwen has also noted the similarities found between the Minoan culture and the Chinese one.
