Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve dwellers will be treated to a glimmering night out as the city’s festivities will be inspired by the gold rush era.
The city will have a “golden moment” as the clock strikes midnight and the skyline will appear like it is blanketed by shimmering golden lights as the fireworks ring in the new year.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says the fireworks will be launched from 17 locations and will use new and exciting effects.
“Fireworks will be launched from landmark buildings throughout the city and it will appear as though gold is raining on the entire city.
The 10-minute display promises to be truly spectacular and will be more than worth its weight in gold,” Cr Doyle said.
Mr Doyle said the theme was chosen because of the national pride and optimism that resulted from the gold rush era of 1881-1891.
The economic boom resulted in the construction of some of Melbourne’s most iconic buildings.
New year’s eve crowds will be able to see the fireworks from anywhere with a view of the city’s skyline, but grab a spot at the Alexandra Gardens and Birrarung Marr areas for the best view of the glitz and sparkle.
