Greek-Canadian Christmas Celebration

The Greek community celebrated Christmas with great fanfare across Canada. Despite initially good weather conditions, it started snowing and Canada became white.

The Greeks of Canada attended the liturgy in Orthodox churches, set the Christmas table and baked the traditional bread and turkey.

Greek women spent most of their time in the kitchen, making delicious Christmas cookies and other delicacies.

Ham, bacon, loaves of christopsomo or ‘Christ bread’ and kourambiethes, a famous Greek nut cookie were also included in the traditional Greek-Canadian Christmas feast.

Many meals also began with a soup eaten on the night of Christmas itself. It’s a simple dish made with chicken, rice and avgolemono sauce, which is composed of lemon and eggs.

The majority of Greek-Canadians celebrated Christmas in the Greek way as they did their parents and grandparents in Greece every year in the past.
