Christmas Holidays in Caves for Homeless People of Athens

Dozens of homeless people in Athens will spend the Christmas holidays in the sheltering caves of Philopappou Hill, away from the rain and the cold weather.
According to two reports conducted by the Ministry of Health and the Municipality of Athens and published by Real News, there are many new age homeless, who once were businessmen and traders, and are now penniless, lying on the streets.
The shocking truth is that among those people there are families as well.
The Miserables of Athens have found shelter in 52 areas around the city. Most of them are gathered in the Korais Square, around the industrial city centre and in the Kolonaki neighborhood.
Most of today’s new homeless people have unpaid debts to the tax office or the insurance funds, and cannot therefore, own a poverty booklet. This means that these people are excluded from the public health care, which forces them to live under terrible conditions.
