Commemorative Plaque in Honor of Eminent Diaspora Greek Nicholaos Doumpas

Greeks in Hungary paid tribute to an eminent Diaspora Greek of the 19th century, Macedonian Nicholaos Doumpas, whose life and work highlighting the universality of Hellenism made him a significant benefactor of Greece.

A few days ago, at 57 Kiraly Street, in the 7th Municipal District of Budapest, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the house where this great national benefactor and patron of the arts died.

The initiative was undertaken by the Greek self-government of Budapest and the Greek self-government of the 7th Municipal district of the Hungarian capital, in collaboration with the Municipal Authorities, the Federation of Greek Associations of Austria, and the Research Institute of Greeks in Hungary.

The unveiling of the plaque, created by Greek Diaspora artist Stefanos Stefanou, was carried out by the Ambassador of Greece, Spyros Georgiles, the Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Michael Zimmermann and the Mayor of the 7th District of Budapest, Vattamany Zsolt.  Historian Dr. Dioszegi Gyorgy spoke about the multifaceted personality of Nicholaos Doumpas.

The ceremony was attended – among others – by the descendants of Manos Family, Press Adviser of the Greek Embassy Nicholaos Vlahakis, the Chairman of the Greek self-government of Budapest, Georgios Tzintzis, the director of the Research Institute of Greeks in Hungary, Nikos Fokas, the President of the Community of Greeks in Hungary, Agardi Spyros, the Chairman of the Greek Self-Government of the 7th District, Nikos Prodromidis, the secretary of the Greek Religious Community and the Greek – Cypriot Hungarian Friendship Association, Vassilis Stamatopoulos, and Greeks in Budapest.
