Justice Minister's Office Targeted in Arson Attack

Miltiadis Papaioannou

The private office of Greek Justice Minister Miltiadis Papaioannou has been targeted in an arson attack a day after an attempted escape at a maximum security prison.
Police say no one was hurt on Tuesday, at 11p.m., when a home-made device using small gas canisters exploded and caused minor damage in the central Athens office.
A day earlier, four inmates took three guards hostage for several hours at Greece’s largest prison, Korydallos, west of Athens, following a failed escape attempt. The guards were eventually released unharmed, along with 25 visitors to the prison who were unable to leave during the standoff.
As justice minister, Papaioannou oversees the prison service.
