Philhellene Etienne Roland Supports Greece in Le Monde Article

Despite all the current anti-Hellenic voices chanting across Europe, there are still many who support Greece and recognize that the Greek people are not completely at fault for all the hardships it is suffering.

One of these modern times Philhellenes is Etienne Roland, former principal of the Athens French School and Professor of Greek Archaeology in Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne Université, who published his eloquent article “Ellada, agapi mou” in French Le Monde daily.

According to the Professor, Greece is being under an unworthy attack. “Characterizing the country that gave birth to the idea of civilization “as less European that it seems” makes me feel disgrace and humiliation” stressed out Mr. Roland in reference to a British news article.

“I feel terrible that my fellow French citizens are distorting history and presenting the Greeks as canny and liars” added Mr. Roland.

Mr. Roland explains all reasons why Greece is more of a European country than Germany or Britain, who is not willing to support its European allies in need without any benefits. The French Professor refers to Lord Byron who is accused of stealing priceless treasures from the country. He also mentions that Greece is the only country that stood up against the Nazis in 1940.

The Professor also explains why Giscard d’Estaing insisted on Greece’s accession in the EU. Democracy and culture are born in Greece.

“The Europeans need to understand that the Greek-Roman culture is the only solid rock upon which our modern European culture is based” concludes Mr. Roland, adding all achievements of the Greek people in arts and culture throughout the centuries.
