Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Officially Translated into Greek

On Thursday, December 6, the official translation of the citizen’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Greek was presented at the Montreal city hall by Mayor Mr. Gerald Tremblay.

The official document was translated into Greek by professor George Kellaris, evidently moved for the honor to our country on behalf of the city of Montreal.

The event also included the presentation of the official translation of the Charter of Rights in Chinese to the Consul General of China. Thus, Greek and Chinese are now considered official languages of Montreal city.

Greek and Chinese represent two major ethnic communities of Montreal and translating the Charter into these two languages is of historical importance to the city.

The ceremony was attended by Montreal city counselor Greek-born Mary Deros, Demetris Roussopoulos, the activist publisher who inspired the idea of translation, and representatives of the Greek and Chinese communities.
