German Deputy Labour Minister Assigned Deputy Minister for Greece

Hans-Joachim Fuchtel was appointed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel as Deputy Minister for promoting and monitoring programmes to be financed by EU funds, which have not been disbursed by Greece.

According to daily Ta Nea, Fuchtel will represent the “Greek-German Representative Assembly” and his goal is to boost the Greek-German friendship and cooperation in terms of certain objectives.

Fuchtel’s base will be the city of Thessaloniki, and he is expected to cooperate with the German Consulate there to absorb more than 100 EU-funded projects for Greece, which cannot be disbursed now due to lack of specific studies.

Fuchtel stressed that these 16 billion Euro projects could help Greece cope with the crisis. The projects focuses on infrastructure, sewage processing, and tourism.

Apart from EU funds aid and city twinning, the German Finance Ministry plans to finance  German research institutions to conduct programmes in Greece.

The Greek press has accepted the news with a tint of suspicion, naming Fuchtel “the Lord of the EU funds” or resembling him to King Otto.
