Anti-Immigrant Barrier to be Put Up Along Evros Borders

“Problems with illegal immigrants are well known, but I must stress that this is the first time a comprehensive plan is being forwarded, aiming at restraining and managing their flow” said Deputy Minister for Citizen Protection Mr. Michalis Othonas.
The plan has been approved and will be co-founded by the European Commission in an attempt of controlling the delicate issues of illegal immigration and human trafficking flowing into the EU from the Greek-Turkish borders along the Evros River, in Northeastern Greece.
It is not merely a problem for the Greek public, which cannot welcome illegal immigrants any longer, but one for the EU as well, pointed out Mr. Othonas while visiting the Immigration Centre at Fylakion in Evros.
The Greek state plans building a barrier along the country’s 150km land border with Turkey within the following 5 months. In the coming weeks, the building of the barrier will be appointed to a construction company, while a floating surveillance will make the overall work of border control easier.
