Greek-flagged cargo vessels serving international routes can be staffed with up to six private guards for defense against possible attacks by pirates, as daily Kathimerini reports citing a new piece of legislation that has been drafted by the Citizens’ Protection Ministry.
As regards the use of weapons by the guards, this will be strictly subject to the command of the ship’s captain, according to the draft bill. Several Greek-owned cargo ships have been attacked by pirates in recent years, particularly off the coast of Somalia.
