Greek Paintings Dominate Sotheby’s Auction

Sotheby’s sale of 19th Century European Paintings in London (which included works by Spanish, Orientalist, German, Austrian, Scandinavian, Symbolist and Greek artists) brought a total of £11,166,050 (€13,168,101), a figure comfortably within pre-sale expectations of £8.6-12.8 million.

Yesterday’s auction follows the previous day’s Greek Sale, which acquired a total of £3,970,600 (€4,644,408), and established six new artists records, including Nicos Hadjikiriakos-Ghika’s Mistras, which made £445,250 against an estimate of £150,000-200,000, and Yiannis Tsarouchis’ Soldier Dancing Zeimbekiko, which made £349,250 against an estimate of £300,000-500,000.

Notably, Greek Sale of Sotheby’s on November 22 has been included in the overall auction exhibition “European Paintings” for the first time since 2001.
