Russia Interested in Cyprus EEZ Exploration

Cyprus state television reported that the Russian energy colossus Gazprom is interested in purchasing the exploration rights for natural gas and oil in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus.
At the same time, the state radio reported that “the Admiral Kuznetsov” aircraft carrier is expected to sail for the Eastern Mediterranean on November 19th from their base in the Barents Sea along with an important Russian naval craft. It has also been reported that the Russian navy may request to use port facilities in Cyprus.
Besides the past decade’s strong friendship between the two countries, Russia has not been supporting Nicosia in continuing its drilling workings without any benefit in mind.
The Russian state company Gazprom, which is currently the largest extractor of natural gas in the international gas market, is interested in securing rights to two gas fields, whose rights will be claimed early 2012.
According to information, the Russian energy company is ready to start exploration in two offshore areas, near the Aphrodite plot, which is currently being drilled by the Texas based Nobel Energy group.
