Greece Wins Two Nations Rowing Cup Champion

Greece won this year’s Two Nations Cup Rowing champion (8+ with coxswain) hosted in Istanbul, after an exciting race against the Turkish national rowing team.
The rowing race began at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 23rd in the Golden Hall of Istanbul, with Galata Bridge as a starting point and Fanari as crossing point. The overall distance covered by the two teams reached almost 3061 kilometers, while the audience filled the Galata Bridge to watch the race.
After an uncertain start off, the Greek rowing crew got ahead of its opponents and finished first at Balat Park after 7:57.39’ time, leaving the Turkish team behind with 8:01.87’ time.
A few moments after the end of the race, the Greek rowers were applauded by the Turkish audience and co-athletes for their effort and victory.
The mayor of Fatih Municipality Mr. Mustafa Demir gave the Greek team the trophy of the co-organized sports event. Turkish Rowing Federation President İlhami İşsever said that the Two Nations Cup rowing competition in İstanbul would strengthen ties between Greece and Turkey.
The Greek Rowing Federation President Mr. Ioannis Karras exchanged commemorative gifts with his Turkish counterpart within this event, which brings together athletes on a national level and promotes the Greek-Turkish friendship.
Greece has won 30 gold medals in European and world rowing championships and has secured a place to compete in the 2012 London Olympic Games. The national team returned Sunday evening from Istanbul.
