Greek Diamond Ring Thief in Custody

Greek George Georgiou from Melbourne stole a $1 million diamond ring in March 2009 from the CBD jewellery store Hardy Brothers Jewellers. Then he fled to Thailand where he attempted to sell the 9.1 carat ring for just $300,000.

The former Freemason has a history of theft. According to Prosecutor Raymond Elston SC, Georgiou was charged of stealing a diamond ring worth $26,995 from a stall at Camberwell Market in 2008. In 2009, Georgiou was involved in a planned burglary.

Defence lawyer Janine Gleeson said on behalf of her client that the 2008 stealing was more opportunistic than the 2009 case. Georgiou will remain in custody as his case will be examined on October 31.
