New Greek Folktale by Anthony Manna

Anthony Manna’s interest in Greece began after he visited the country back in the 90’s to research Greek children’s literature and teach at a university there.

Mr. Manna, who lives in Poland and is a retired professor from Kent State University, has spent the past 10 years writing children’s books about the European nation’s folktales.

Manna’s latest book “The Orphan: A Cinderella Story from Greece,” which he co-authored with Greek Christodoula Mitakidou, was released last Tuesday by a division of Random House publishing.

Manna said he hopes children who read “The Orphan” will learn “to understand the idea of tradition in our fast-paced, digital world.”

In 2002, Manna and Mitakidou had also co-authored another book with a collection of 20 Greek folklore stories, named “Folktales from Greece: A Treasury of Delights” and in 2003 the children’s  book “Mr. Semolina-Semolinus”.

“I knew the Greek myths — we all do — but not the folktales. Folklore teaches us about universal themes: survival, love, family, and resistance” he said.
