Greek-African Melodious Messages Mix at Open Mind Fiesta

Songs of hope, love and unity will fill High St in a harmonious meeting of cultures and sound at this year’s Open Mind Fiesta.

Kundalila, a unique a cappella and acoustic four-piece, blends African and Greek harmonies and will be among a diverse and eclectic mix of performers in this year’s line-up.

Translated as “cooing dove”, the band’s name is taken from the Bemba language of Zambia in Southern Africa.

“Our name is descriptive of our sound. It is harmonious, melodious, a somewhat sober tune, but with a very powerful message”, singer Ruramayi Makombeshamu said.

Kundalila combines the vocal talents of Makombeshamu and her sister, Sharon, who grew up singing in Southern Africa, with Rene Sephton, who has a Greek background, and Alice Chew, a Melbourne performer with a belief in using the arts for promoting peace.

They will be performing songs in multiple African languages (Shona, Congolese, Lingala, Ndevele) as well as in Greek, French and English.

Kundalila will perform at 4pm on the main stage, which is at the corner of Murray Rd and High St, Preston.
