Bulgarians’ Retirement Complications with Greece’s Social Security

Bulgarian citizens working in Greece, complain that they have been unable to file their retirement papers for two years now, because the Greek Social Security Institute has not sent the service certificates to Bulgaria’s Social Security Institute.

These certificates are of importance to Bulgarians who apply for retirement payments, as Social Security employees use them to calculate the total length of service of the retirees and decide if they are eligible for retirement payments under the Bulgarian legislation.

“Greece is the only EU country with which we have correspondence issues”, the Social Security Institute said. Letters are delayed at least one year.

Last year, Bulgaria’s Labor and Social Policy Minister Totyu Mladenov proposed to his Greek counterpart that the Social Security Institutes of both countries should sign an agreement provoding the timely exchange of information. Athens accepted the proposal, but no particular actions have been taken yet.
