Prime Minister: We Need To Build On July 21 Conclusions

George Papandreou said on Thursday that the comprehensive package would include issues such as the need for deeper economic cooperation, integration and governance, the strengthening of the EFSF and the strengthening of the European banking system.
“We need to ensure confidence and calm in the markets,” said the Prime Minister, following a meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.
“A crucial element is to make the necessary decisions concerning Greece, building on our recent summit conclusions of July 21st”, he added.
Papandreou also said that Greece has great potential, but admitted that this potential has been mismanaged in the past, urging for major reforms.
“Radical changes that we are implementing throughout the Greek economy and in the public administration to guarantee competiveness, productivity, growth, transparency and social justice”, he stated.
Moreover, the PM’s spokesman Elias Mossialos said that Greece΄s government is seeking a rescue package that would give the country greater relief on its debts than the plans outlined at the July 21 EU summit, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
Briefing reporters after Papandreou-Van Rompuy meeting, Mossialos said the Greek government would only favour a deal that has broad market support.
“Greece wants improvements on the July 21 agreement, provided that the market and other stakeholders are on board with any such changes,” he said.
