Greek “Attenberg” Receives Romanian International Film Festival Award

On Saturday night, Greek director Athina Rachel Tsangari’s “Attenberg” won the Best Film Award at the seventh Romanian International Film Festival RO-IFF.

The judge committee consisted of prominent figures of the cinema industry both from Romania and abroad. Tsangari’s film received the award for “the broader idea behind film production breaking the cultural barriers of the country”.

In “Attenberg” the four lead roles are played by Vangelis Mourikis, Ariane Labed, Evangelia Randou and Giorgos Lanthimos. The story revolves around Marina, 23, who is growing up with her architect father in a prototype factory town by the sea. Finding the human species strange and repellent, the young woman keeps her distance. Instead, she stubbornly observes it through the songs of suicide, the mammal documentaries of Sir David Attenborough, and the sex educational lessons she receives from her only friend, Bella.

The film will also be Greece’s official submission to the 84th Academy Awards (Oscar) 2012.
