Rallis’ Good Friday to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s

One of Theodoros Rallis’ (1852-1909) masterpieces will be auctioned at Sotheby’s on Tuesday, 22 November 2011 in London as part of the Greek Sale.

The painting comes from a private collection and depicts Good Friday in Greece. It is an oil on canvas, which was bought in Paris in 1935 by the grandfather of its current owner and its value is estimated somewhere between 340.000 and 540.000 euros.

Good Friday, Greece (original title: Le Vendredi- Saint, Greece) was selected by Rallis for the Paris Salon in 1893 and is one of the many ecclesiastic themes he has used during his career.

The work shows four girls in Megara of Attica adorning a funeral bier with flowers in preparation for Good Friday while two priests are talking to each other nearby.
