Turkish Prime Minister Remarks on FYROM Name Dispute

Νea Dimokratia Party has accused the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tagip Erdogan of destabilizing relations, collaboration and peace in the Balkan peninsula and Southeastern Europe after the latter’s supportive declarations to FYROM on the name dispute with Greece.

Erdoğan was critical of the Greek government’s attitude, which has been blocking the country’s NATO membership over the name dispute. In fact, during his speech on Tuesday, Mr. Erdogan claimed that it is “ugly and “wrong” for Greece to ask Macedonia to change its constitutional name to join NATO.

The opposition party in Greece, represented by Mr. P. Panagiotopoulos, answered immediately that “The Greek thesis on the name of FYROM totally apprehends and respects International Law and represents the one and only historical truth”.

Mr. Panagiotopoulos expressed his disappointment that “Mr. Erdogan showed once more during an official visit what kind of a relationship he wishes to establish between Turkey and Greece”. Additionally, the Greek representative claimed that Mr. Erdogan’s action revealed the general thesis of his country towards the International Law regulation.
