Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers’ UN Meeting

Bilateral relationships and matters of the region were the topics for discussion between Foreign Affairs Ministers of Greece and Turkey, Stavros Lamprinidis and Ahmet Davutoglu at the UN base in New York.

According to diplomatic sources, during their 40-minutes meeting, Mr. Lamprinidis referred to the statements and actions made by Turkey in the past few weeks as threatening for the preservation of stability in the wider region and stressed out the urgency of reducing tension between the two countries.

Mr. Lamprinidis also said that Cyprus is only practicing its legal sovereign rights according to international law and no one can question them.

On behalf of Turkey, Mr. Davutoglu answered by repeating the established political theses of Turkey, according to which the country is only responding to unilateral actions of the Greek Cypriots and does not wish to further escalate the situation in the Southeastern Mediterranean.

Another topic of their discussion was the next meeting of the Greek-Turkish Cooperation Council, which both parts want to take place sometime in the following moths in order to structure a progressive climate for their countries’ relationships.
