Cretans Get Creative to Collect Money for Schools

Parents of pupils that study at the Primary School of Iraklio, Crete are trying to find a solution for the problem of very high photocopy prices by organizing a lottery market…with a pig reward.
On Monday, that marked the new school year start, the headmaster of the school made a request to all parents to give a helping “economic” hand because the expenditures are high, while the income of the School Committee will decrease.
Especially after the delayed printing of the school books, the expenditures will increase more, because the printing of the books will take place inside the school.
The Parents’ Association corresponded immediately with the headmaster’s request, by organizing a lottery market in order to find additional money for the new expenditures of the school.
Among the others, parents can even win a pig through the lottery market, offered by a butcher, whose children study in the same school of Iraklio.
According to members of the Parents’ association it is not the first time that a lottery market is being organized, but this time the situation seems to be much harder. Many parents are desperated, because either they are unemployed or semi-employed, and thus they cannot afford to buy any photocopies for their children.
The lottery market with its winning rewards is an attempt to create a nice beginning to the school year…even with photocopies.
