Greek Prime Minister Papandreou’s Program in the US

Greek prime minister George Papandreou is scheduled to arrive in New York on Saturday, September 17, for the 66th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), on the sidelines of which he will have meetings with other heads of state and government, while he will also chair a presidium meeting of the Socialist International (SI), of which he is president.

He will also meet in Washington with US Congress officials and International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde.

Papandreou will being his itinerary of bilateral contacts the following day with a meeting with UN secretary Ban Ki-moon, after which he will meet with high-ranking representatives of the Jewish American organisations.

He will also have meetings with Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Cyprus president Demetris Christofias and with the leaders of the countries of the Middle East and other areas.

Papandreou will further attend the traditional reception for the heads of state and government, attending the General Assembly that will be hosted by US President Barack Obama, and a luncheon to be hosted by the UN chief.  The Greek prime minister and SI president will chair a meeting of the Socialist International presidium on Friday, September 23, after which he will deliver an address to the UN General Assembly.

On September 19, Papandreou will attend a luncheon at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and that same evening will address a gathering at a hotel in Manhattan organised by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA).

During his stay in New York, Papandreou will give press conferences on the US media.

On September 22, he will attend a reception in his honor at the Greek Consulate General in New York that will be attended by Archbishop Demetrios of America, high-ranking officials of Greek-American organizations, academics, businesspeople and personalities of the Arts and Letters.

In between the New York events, Papandreou will fly to Washington on September 20th for meetings with IMF chief Lagarde and the leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations and House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committees.
Greek foreign minister Stavros Lambrinidis, who will be accompanying Papandreou to the US, will also have a series of sideline meetings in New York with his counterparts. Lambrinidis will represent Greece at several high-level meetings, as well at the customary EU foreign affairs ministers’ meetings with their US and Russian counterparts.
