Names 6,000 Businesses For Tax Evasion

Greece’s Finance Ministry Thursday released the names of 6,000 businesses that owed more than EUR30 billion in unpaid back taxes as part of a new campaign to name and shame tax evaders.
The list includes several state-owned enterprises, topped by Greece’s national railroad company, OSE, which alone owned the government EUR1.3 billion in back taxes and other debts.
It also included a wide swathe of private businesses–some of which have ceased operations–as well as companies belonging to local government organizations, farmers’ cooperatives and even sports clubs.
In a statement, the Finance Ministry said that a separate list of individuals owing money to the state will be published after getting the okay from Greece’s data protection agency.
“The publishing of names will significantly help improve the efficiency of revenue collection and strengthen trust between the ministry and taxpayers through the promotion of transparency,” the ministry said.
