Opposition Party Leads Opinion Polls

Opinion polls published in three Sunday newspapers place Greece’s conservative New Democracy party in the lead over the ruling Socialists by 0.6 to 5.1 percentage points, AFP reported.
A survey carried out by MRB for Real News newspaper gave the Conservatives a whopping 5.1 percentage point lead over Prime Minister George Papandreou’s PASOK party.
An Alco group survey for Proto Thema newspaper showed New Democracy (ND) leading in voter preference over PASOK by 4.8 percent and a Kappa Research opinion poll for To Vima newspaper gave the main opposition party a 0.6 percent lead.
Despite voter intentions favouring the main opposition party, most people surveyed want Papandreou’s government to complete its four-year mandate.
However, ND leader Antonis Samaras said in an interview with Eleftheros Typos on Sunday that it would be “very difficult” for the government to avoid calling early elections.
“I believe their (the government’s) deadlocks will become increasingly larger. More and more insurmountable. Their policy failed, just as we had warned them,” said Samaras.
