Shipbuilding Exhibition in Melbourne

The Hellenic Foundation of Culture in cooperation with the Hellenic Museum “Nafsika Stamouli” presents for the first time an Exhibition of micro shipbuilding  in Melbourne which includes copies of Greek ships that present important moments of the history of shipping. The artworks of micro shipbuilding are accompanied by copies of Ancient Greek objects representing marine life. The President of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, professor Mr. George Babiniotis says in the introduction of the catalogue of the exhibition “The sea, an integral element of the Greek history and Greek culture has the ability to bring closer different nations and cultures, uniting and inspiring people”. “The emotional identification of the Greeks with the sea is presented in a moving way in the works of Grypiotis which reflect substantial knowledge of the historical sources and deep love for these “wooden boats” and the culture they represent.” The ships of Mr. Grypiotis were brought in Melbourne, which is a city with great tradition in shipping, in order to offer a trip in the Greek culture. Mr. Babiniotis adds that “The artworks apart from aesthetic pleasure offer lessons of shipping and history, ethnology, mythology, economy even democracy”. The Exhibition takes place thanks to the financial and emotional support by Mr. Harris Stamoulis, President of the Hellenic Museum. The exhibition will be open to the public from September 22nd, 2011-February 26, 2012 at the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne.
