Holiday Island Airport Closes Down – Because of Sick Fireman

Greek aviation officials were forced to close down the airport on the tiny holiday island of Milos on Tuesday after the sudden illness of the only on-duty fireman, officials said.
No flights were allowed to land or depart from the airport after the fireman, who was on duty to safeguard the airfield, suffered a heart-attack.
The second fireman stationed at the airport was away on holiday, leaving aviation officials with a safety problem on their hands.
‘We have asked that another fireman be flown out by helicopter as soon as possible so that the airport can re-open again on Wednesday,’ a civilian aviation official told the German Press Agency dpa.
The tiny island of Milos has a population of 5,000 but balloons to more than 8,000 in additional tourists during the busy summer season.
