The limitation in the time period of mandatory military service from 12 to 9 months has caused problems as there exists a noticeable shortage of manpower in military units. The Ministry of Defense is considering increasing the length of time for the mandatory tour of duty, according to an article in the Greek newspaper “Ethnos.” It is also reconsidering deferments allowed for university studies or health problems and the criteria regarding physical ability of soldiers.
The shortage problem was aggravated by the fact that current economic and social situations make it impossible to hire more professional soldiers. Some of the enlisted men in the Land Forces have already been ordered to be transferred to the Navy or the Air Forces, where the period of military service already lasts 12 months.
