Tourists Go to Greece While Greeks Stay Home

The arrivals of foreign tourists in Greece have significantly increased from last year in spite of  hotel prices being considerably higher than last year.
Data collected for July showed that the year will end with positive results in terms of arrivals, but also in terms of revenue.
Regarding tourism, the latest figures show an increase of 9.4% in international arrivals at 13 major airports, with a large increase in Rhodes and Kos.   However, it is estimated that domestic tourism has dropped by 20%.
Important Greeks destinations such as the Peloponnese, Thessaly and Chalkidiki, are now facing problems due to lack of revenue from Greek customers. The sharp drop in domestic tourism is probably due to the economic crisis, high unemployment, cuts in income and price increases in hotels.
Finally, an increase of 5.5% has been recorded in terms of tourist revenues over the first five months of this year. By the end of the year, the state hopes to regain 1 billion euros.
