According to the director of the Greek Lifeguard School Vania Vihou, the number of applications for working as a lifeguard has risen up to 70%. At the same time, there are so many available positions for lifeguards in pools and beaches in the region of Attiki and the province that one in three positions remains vacant.
Mrs. Vihou stated in the Greek newspaper “Espresso” that high rates of unemployment and lifeguards’ salary which varies between 900 to 1000 euro in Attiki and 1200 euro and above in the province motivate young people to decide to work during summer. The director notes that it is easy for someone to become a lifeguard as long as he is in a good physical condition and is willing to work. The candidates follow courses for two weeks and pass their exams at the Port Police. The courses cost 450 euro and 8 out of 10 candidates pass successfully the tests.
