NBC is set to welcome fashion designer John Varvatos to mentor contestants on its upcoming competition series Fashion Star.
Varvatos – a native of suburban Detroit, whose family originally hails from the Greek island of Kefalonia – is known around the world as being one of the most influential people in the fashion industry.
His resume includes work with Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein as the head of menswear design for both companies. He is also the founder and CEO of the John Varvatos Fashion House established back in 1999. His line contains accessories such as belts, handbags, footwear, eyewear, watches, skincare, and fragrances. And to top it all off, he has a trophy mantel that is crowded with awards ranging from Menswear Designer of the Year in 2001 and 2005, to GQ’s Designer of the Year in ’07.
No big deal.
Varvatos will join style icon and creative designer Nicole Richie, as well as actress and singer Jessica Simpson, as part of the star-studded panel for the competition.
The reality television show, hosted by Elle Macpherson, is searching for America’s next big brand in fashion by providing 14 unknown designers with celebrity mentors such as Varvatos. At the end of each show, viewers will have a chance to instantly purchase designs made by the contestants. The winner of the show will receive a multi-million dollar prize to launch their fashion lines in three of America’s largest retailers.
NBC’s executive committee feels that the cast of celebrities assembled for Fashion Star are the most exciting team they have ever worked with on reality television.
“[We] could not have asked for better additions to the celebrity mentors than [John] Varvatos, one of the most well-known menswear designers in the nation,” said Paul Telegdy, NBC’s executive VP of alternative programming. “[Varvatos and Richie] are both trendsetters and tastemakers and their design skills and expertise will be invaluable to our contestants on the series.”
Fashion Star will air its series premiere this coming fall
