Technology connects the world, helps the environment, fights diseases and poverty and contributes to strengthening democracy and freedom of peoples. These were some of the messages the speakers conveyed during yesterday evening’s ceremony organized by the Microsoft company, at Lincoln Center, New York for the awards of the Imagine Cup 2011 competition. 350,000 contestants, including pupils and students from 70 countries took part and two Greek students were among the winners.
“Alaniarides”, which consists of students from the Athens School of Economics, George Karakatsiotis and Vangelis Pterneas, who last year won the Greek final Microsoft Imagine Cup student contest, ranked first in the category “Interoperability Challenge” (challenge promoting interoperability).
Karakatsiotis (PhD student) and Pterneas (Postgraduate student) participated in the implementation of the “Touring Machine” project, which automatically generates personalized tours (electronic tour guide) at exhibitions, museums and archaeological sites. Behind this invention, a research project was carried out with Professor Ion Androutsopoulos.
