Yesterday, thousands of grieving and angry people attended the separate funerals of eight officers, sailors and firemen who were killed in Monday’s massive blast at the Evangelos Florakis naval base near Mari on Monday.
The funerals took place in the Larnaca and Limassol districts. Captain Andreas Ioannides Commander of the Navy (National Guard General Staff) was laid to rest in Limassol, hailed as a hero by those who delivered his eulogy.
Blast causes 2m EUR damage in nearby communities
Damages reaching two million euros have been recorded in the residential areas of Larnaca and Limassol, as a result of the shock wave from Monday`s deadly explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Limassol, which also destroyed the island`s major power plant.
Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said damages in residential areas reached 510,000 euros in the Larnaca District and 1,439,000 euros in the Limassol District, adding that available funds from his Ministry and the Civil Defence would be used to cover part of the costs for repairs. The rest, he said, would be approved by the Council of Ministers.
Sylikiotis pointed out that residents already repairing their homes would receive financial assistance from the state over the next few days, while others who suffered more serious damage, which needed assessment, would be given aid soon.
