Thomas Cooke Travel Agency Ranks Greece as 2nd Popular Destination

Greece is the ideal holiday destination for many people, according to a recent article published in an Austrian newspaper. Fifteen million tourists, mostly British, French and Germans visit Greece every year.  The number of Austrian tourists amounts to 600,000, which, compared to the country’s population (8.4 million inhabitants), brings Austria into first place in terms of arrivals in Greece.

John Afoukatidis, the head of the Thomas Cook tourist agency in Austria, claims that: ”After last year’s negative figures for tourism, Greece increased its tourism this year, as hotel prices are lower by 10 to 20%.”

The article adds that according to the tourist agency, the third largest in Austria, Greece ranks as the second tourist destination after Spain. The third most popular destination is Turkey, although Turkey is likely to surpass Greece’s tourism figures this year.

The reduction of VAT on hotel businesses and airport taxes had a positive impact on tourism, while ferry prices will be lower from June onwards. As for strikes and riots, Mr. John Rafalias from EOT’s office in Austria reassured that they are limited in the city center and do not affect the region or the islands.
