Old Greek Cinema of NSW Wins Prize for Best Renovated Building

“The Saraton Theatre”, an old Greek cinema built in 1926 by Angelos Notaras, in New South Wales’ provincial town of Grafton, won the prize for the best renovated building.
The building was in terrible condition and no longer functioning. The owners tried to auction it and later sell it to the city, but they had no luck. However local authorities, with the mediation of Hazel Hook, former wife of the former Australian Premier Bob Hook, declared the building a monument.
The Notaras family had no choice but to restore the building, spending over a million dollars.
On Tuesday evening, the cinema which is now considered a “work of art” earned the top Australian Award for the Restoration of a Historical Building.
As for the building, its value reaches several million dollars.
