New Book Release for “Greek Painters of Instanbul”

Mayda Saris

A new book titled “İstanbullu Rum Ressamlar” (Greek Painters of İstanbul), by Mayda Saris- an αrt consultant- has been released. The book offers an extensive look at Greek painters either born in İstanbul or lived and worked in İstanbu,l from the 19th century to date. Most of them had to leave Turkey for political reasons.
“I started with researching significant artists from different cultural backrounds ” says Saris and while researching, I realized that there was a confusion of Armenian and Greek artists in many resources. So I started to research Greek artists.
The common point that brings together all these artists is, of course, İstanbul. The influence of the city can still be felt in the paintings. This is the common point, a great love for İstanbul.”
She has received tremendous support from Patriarch Bartholomew, Athanasios Papas, art historian and metropolitan of Kadıköy, and Greek Consul General in İstanbul Vasilios Bornovas.
The book is published by Birzamanlar Publishing in both Turkish and English, while the writer still continues researching the issue.
