Australia Honors the Greeks of the Unforgettable “cafés”

Gwydir Shire, New South Wales, is going to honor the Greek contribution to an unknown part of Australian life. It will celebrate the 75th anniversary since the foundation of Peter’s & Co Cafe. Two Greeks coming from Kythira, created this “cafe”, a block building which included cafe, restaurant, cinema and inn. Today, this block is a museum and it has been completely renovated, but it keeps its traditional architecture. It is a museum dedicated to Greeks who installed in the province of Australia before the War. Gwydir Shire hopes that this museum will become a place of national and international importance and that it will collect, maintain and protect important parts of the Greek presence in the area. The celebration is going to take place on April 9 and 10 and will include:

* Films from Hollywood’s Golden Age

*The 75th dancing party with the participation of the Greek music band “Χαβαλέ”

*Exhibition about the Greek presence in the area

*Documentary of 1958 about life in Bargara, filmed by Bill Kouvousis
