The Ministry of Environment will carry out a special research mission in the town of Serres. The mission will search for gold that financed Alexander the Great’s campaigns. After a decision by Deputy Minister, Giannis Maniatis, Greece will conducts its research on a 2,5 acre plot of ground. The Institute of Geological and Extractive Research will search for gold and other minerals. The samplings, effectuated in 1980, revealed that there are large amounts of gold in the area. The Institute of Geological and Extractive Research will carry out drillings, in order to estimate the quantities of gold.
