The death toll of the terrible quake that hit New Zealand rose to 113, while 280 people are officially listed as missing. There are also thousands of people injured. Damages are estimated at over $16 billion dollars.
The president of the Greek Community of Christchurch, Panayotis Chaloumis, discussed the “absolute disaster”. “Serious damages were caused in most of the buildings and all streets need to be repaired. Fortunately, no Greeks are among the victims, at the moment. However, several damages were caused in houses of Greeks, in the Greek Orthodox Church of the town, as well as in the Greek schools”.
