Greece's Sea Level Increase Causes Concern

The sea level rise will cause serious problems to Greek coastlines. More than 800 square kilometers are expected to dissapear in the near future and many sea shores will be covered with water. Planet heating, climate changes, melting of the ice and the rise of  temperature will change the charting of the earth. Homes, hotels and cities situated on coastlines may be destroyed by intense floods. According to a teacher of maritime research, Efstratios Doukakis: “The coastline recedes on the average 1,2 meters every year.”  For every meter of sea shore, we lose more than one square meter of coastline every year. Until 2070, the temperature in the summer will rise 8ºC.  As a result, the next 50 years, phenomena of drought will be extremely frequent”. The high risk areas are the island of Kos, Northen Crete, the city of Messolonghi, Western Peloponnisos and Patra, Western Thermaikos, the Corinthian Gulf and the city of Egio.
