Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Tuesday that the euro will survive and Greece will be among the survivors, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
He also said that he expects a comprehensive decision to deal with the European UnionĪs debt crisis by the end of March despite disagreements by members on a proposed Franco-German competitiveness pact.
“By the end March Europe will come up with a comprehensive solution,” Juncker said in Athens after talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou.
āGermany and France have proposed a competitiveness pact. But we donĪt know the specifics of that proposal,” Juncker said. “There are some points we agree with, but others we donĪt.
“The euro is not facing a crisis nor is the euro at risk,” he added, according to the news agency.
Prime Minister George Papandreou said that Europe must move ahead with the issue of fiscal governance. āMarkets have reacted positively in light of the expected decisions on the competitiveness pact and the EFSFā, he added.
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou told the same news conference that euro zone leaders should take decisions in March, without delay.
“We are on the right path but as it was clear from the beginning, Europe has to take the necessary decisions as there were shortages in the euro zone’s economic governance,” he said.
