Greek Cultural Association of Cypriots in Greece Organize Literature Contest

The Greek Cultural Association of Cypriots in Greece organized for the third consecutive year, an international literature contest for Greeks and Cypriots from all over the world. The participants will compete in poetry, literature, history, theater, essays, short stories and theatrical plays. More specifically, the candidates in poetry, will write a poem up to seven verses for the subject: “Famagusta-Vasilevousa (Istanbul)”. The subject in literature, history and theater, is Maria Syncletike. Maria Syncletike was a 16th century Cypriot heroine. When the Ottoman Turks invaded and occupied Cyprus in 1570-71, she was taken prisoner, put in a ship at the port of Famagusta together with a group of other young girls, to be taken to Constantinople as a gift to the sultan. Maria was determined to avoid such humiliation and set fire to the ship’s powder-house, and died an honorable death.
