Severe Changes in Greek High Schools Starting September 2011

The Ministry of Education in Greece is two months away from announcing changes that will set “The New High School”.  They are based off all the conventional eduational techniques and new changes will be introduced, which will aim to narrow down memorization and promote critical knowledge.
The chairman of the Pedagogical Institute, Cl. Navridis has talked about the objectives of the new type of high school: “Students should start to be more familiar with research procedures and processes. That is to learn to formulate questions, identify problems and investigations upon them. In addition to seeking answers to problems they will also be using research tools to analyze and synthesize data.”
Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou has several times publicly expressed her intentions to change the current type of school, combining it with the change of univeristies and TEI’s examinations entries.
However, many teachers have expressed the opinion that if that change is severe it will more difficult to be adopted and therefore fail. They argue that perhaps the most difficult task of planning such changes will be to address cultural and social inequalities. That is why there is a serious need of taking into account that any educational changes should be accompanied by some social measures to ensure equality in knowledge.
