Majority of Australians Didn’t Accept Greek Immigrants

According to a survey held in 1951, the majority of Australians would not accept Greek immigrants.
Only 42.7% of Australians said Australia should take immigrants from Greece, as opposed to 80.6% approval for The Netherlands, 55.4% approval for Germany and nearly 100% approval for the U.K.
Australia’s strong history of immigration is proof that political leaders must not be driven by the polls, according to a new essay by senior journalist with The Australian, George Megalogenis (photo). He also considers that the politicians of  the 1950 ignored the surveys, accepted Greek immigrants, as well as immigrants from neighboring countries and did the right thing. “The immigrants offered a lot to Australia and today Australians are proud of them”, he claims.
