Streets in Athens have tons of uncollected garbage due to the strike of utility company workers.  The strike is on its fifth day. Greek media reported that workers insist for bigger salaries and higher security at the work place. Protesters demand the renewal of short-term work contracts for about 100 employees. The strike is scheduled to last until Wednesday night.
Interior Minister Yiannis Ragoussis on Tuesday lashed out at outgoing Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis after meeting with newly elected Mayor Giorgos Kaminis.  The meeting topics were the issue of renewals of short-term municipal contract workers, and the pressing problem of garbage collection throughout the broader Athens area during the Christmas holidays.
